5 Family-Friendly Summer Activities

With summer here, we want to share with you some of our favourite family-friendly activities and things to do in West Cork. We have included some variety so whether you fancy something more active or a slow, relaxing day out with the family, we have you covered. We believe West Cork’s greatest gems are found out in nature, so we have focused this list on outdoor activities.

So, in no particular order, here are some of our favourite child friendly things to do in West Cork:

1 - A walk in the Fairy Woods in Rineen

The picturesque trail at Rineen in West Cork is dotted with fairy houses and all sorts of magic for kids and those young at heart. Bring boots/wellies if it has been raining recently, some fairy dust and a mind open to tales of magic. These fairy woods are only a short side-step from the Wild Atlantic Way near Union Hall. You can find more information and directions in our dedicated post, linked below.

2 - Castlefreke, Kilkeran Lake & High Cross

This wonderful, scenic loop walk is roughly 8km (or 6km without the optional section through the forest) and another one of the many wonderful family-friendly walks and hikes in West Cork. It is marked red (Rathbarry - Kilkeran Loop) on the trail signs and brings you up to the High Cross, overlooking Castlefreke, Rathbarry old churches, onward through Castlefreke Forest, past Kilkeran Lake and along above the Dunes of Long Strand with magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean with Galley Head Lighthouse to the east of the strand. You can find more information and directions in our dedicated post, linked below.

3 - A Day At The Beach

West Cork boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Ireland and there is a huge choice of beaches all along the coast of West Cork. From the rugged coastline around Barleycove Beach to the sheltered Warren Strand, there is something for everyone. Inchydoney Beach, a blue flag beach, is a popular spot for surfers and swimmers alike, while Red Strand Beach offers a breathtaking view of Galley Head lighthouse. We have put together a list of 5 of our favourite beaches in West Cork.

4 - Blue Pool, Glengariff

The Blue Pool is a special place! Its naturally and picturesque harbour is hidden yet super accessible only a few minutes walk from the Main Street in Glengariff. It has lovely trails, walks and some magical fairy houses in an idyllic forest with views of the natural harbour. If you go beyond the Blue Pool itself you reach “The Point” where there is a diving board and a beautiful sun trapped bathing area as well as a pontoon from which to swim off. There is so much to explore here for the kids! You can find more information and directions in our dedicated post, linked below.

5 - Gougane Barra Forest Park

Gougane Barra Forest Park offers an ideal setting for a family day out with children in West Cork. The park's serene atmosphere provides a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are leisurely walks along the stream and through the woodland trails as well as longer, more challenging hikes for families with older children. There are also picnic areas available for families to enjoy some al fresco dining amidst the picturesque surroundings. You can find more information and directions in our dedicated post, linked below.
